Ode to the Tomato

Ode to the Tomato

It seemed to come from nowhere,

This little green node of promise.

It wasn’t there the night before,

But in the morning – ah, bliss!

It sparkled in the early dew.

I dared not expect a kiss.

I’ve met too much disappointment

When my efforts have gone amiss.

My hope was it would change its hue

And ripen green to red,

That others soon would join the crew

To lay a merry bed

Of fruit for me to savor.

I must not be misled.

Ah, look! My wish was granted.

My hunger now is fed.

Tomatoes everywhere I look

And under my feet to squish.

I filled every jar I have,

And each and every dish.

I give them away to neighbors.

But do I regret my wish?

No never, never, never,

Because they’re so delish!
